A fortified and heavily defended dwarven stronghold. A bridge leads to a well-guarded entranceway with a huge iron gate and large metal reinforced doors, followed by a guarded tunnel and another set of strong doors. Beyond that is an entire underground city in a giant cavern, sloping upwards with row above row of homes, workplaces, and businesses. The city has two rivers, the Nosar and Urbar, flowing through it with bridges and stairways leading everywhere. The city is lit and heated by countless braziers fed by flammable gas found plentifully under the mountain. Magic light and oil lanterns are also common. The dwarves also have a type of brittle rock that burns seemingly forever, but doesn't provide much illumination. Nearly all dwarves can see in total darkness, but much prefer light which allows them to see colors and greater distances.
The city is laid out in tiers. Among the highest of these is The Upslope, home to many of the stronghold's Gnomes and honored officials such the Meister, and some of the House Halls. Middle tiers include a craft and business district built around a central market triangle, a divine district with temples to Moradin, Garl Glittergold, Valkauna and others, and a garden district with 7 magical spheres providing light for the plants day and night. The lowest tier, The Flats, is where the entranceway is. The Warrens, home to Sloss Hinterplatz's transient and poor, is on this low tier as well as Humantown, a neighborhood set up for human guests and residents, and the gate to the Maldir, or dwarven deep roads.
Sloss Hinterplatz is a good place to find any sort of metal or mineral, as well as the only real source of quality metal armor.
The Houses control much of trade and politics in Sloss Hinterplatz. There are either six, seven, or eight houses in Sloss Hinterplatz depending on who you ask. The three most powerful houses are House Callivari, House Orthell, and House Palimar. There are three less powerful, but still influential houses, House Boril, House Venssa, and House Trinoa. House Simiran has been banned from the Halls of the Dead and is shunned by society if not by business. There is also a house with only a single member.
